She knew she needed to leave her abusive husband. With no income she was trapped. She asked for help to begin a new life.

History of the Jewish Assistance Fund

In 1985 a group of philanthropic individuals met and created what is known today as the Jewish Assistance Fund. The mission was to supply needed dollars to help Jewish people in the greater Pittsburgh area experiencing financial difficulty with their food, clothing, shelter and medical assistance.

The insight and compassion of this group of people for the times and the future was monumental. The number of individuals and families who are serviced today because of that insight has grown tremendously because of the effort and commitment to help as many as possible to meet their immediate financial obligations.

Today's trying economic times have created financial hardships for many new individuals and families, necessitating new and creative means of funding the JAF to meet our growing obligations.
